  • Kolkata: A 25-year-old man, who was celebrating his birthday with friends after landing a job barely a month ago, was found dead on Monday morning.

The victim, Prashant Pandey, had extensive burns on his hands, legs, and abdomen at his second-floor rented residence on Rabindra Sarani in Jorasanko. Police received a distress call at 10.18 am on Monday. "We sent a team to the location. The circumstances leading to the incident are currently under investigation," said deputy police commissioner (central division) Raj Kumar Singh.

Cops believe that Pandey or one of his friends was smoking and the fire spread from the cigarette accidentally. "The role of each friend is being looked into, and we are trying to ascertain if they fled leaving him behind or whether the incident took place after everyone left," said a cop. "No formal complaint has been lodged but we registered an unnatural death case," said a police officer.
