  • 12 Kolkata: Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday accused Centre of "misleading" people, and demanded the external affairs ministry shared the details of the bilateral talks following the foreign secretary's visit to Bangladesh.

"The foreign secretary went there (for a meeting with Bangladesh), but they should come to the House and speak about the details of the discussions held there. The EAM should give a statement. This is the custom of Parliament," said Banerjee outside Parliament in New Delhi on Monday.

Banerjee said a minister was expected to update the members of the House after a bilateral talk. "This is part of parliamentary politics. This is a minimum courtesy every MP expects from the govt," he said.

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka on Dec 9, the first such visit since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led govt, and met Md Yunus, chief adviser of the interim govt of Bangladesh, and Jashim Uddin, foreign secretary of the neighbouring nation.

Banerjee said, "If they don't want to share the details of the talks and want to keep a population of 140 crore Indians in the dark, the people will understand the govt's attempt to mislead them. They will give a befitting answer at the right time... I have stated earlier as well that Bengal govt strongly condemns the continuous persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. The govt of India should take a strict stance regarding this matter."
