  • Kolkata: Calcutta HC Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam on Tuesday asked the state to ensure that the tram services currently in operation are not suspended until the next hearing and that tracks should not be covered with bitumen.

The CJ also said the court would be constrained to pass certain adverse orders as the advisory committee constituted by the HC for the revival of tram routes had not met for nearly a year. While the committee was set up on Aug 7, 2023, it had not met after Jan 4, 2024.

On the bituminisation of tram tracks, the advocate general submitted that an application was filed for recalling the order that restrained the state from doing so. The application will be heard after the committee files a report with the minutes of the meeting of the committee, with an explanation as to why no meeting was held after Jan 2024. "If the explanation offered is not satisfactory, the court will be constrained to pass certain adverse orders. It is reiterated that until further orders, there shall not be any further bituminisation of tram tracks or their removal, The matter is listed on Jan 14," the Chief Justice said.
