Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee will on Wednesday formally inaugurate the new campus of Infosys at New Town, along with the state IT and electronics minister Babul Supriyo and principal chief adviser to the CM Amit Mitra. Top officials of Infosys, including its CFO, will be present at the event.
A state govt official told TOI: "The IT giant got 50 acres of land to develop the new Kolkata campus at New Town. Infosys started its operations on 17.5 acres this year. Gradually, it will expand operations to the rest of the land, and the campus will be fully functional." The total investment in the project is estimated at Rs 600 crore, per a company filing in 2021.
Infosys started a recruitment drive for the campus earlier this year and is likely to employ a few thousand people in the next few months. Earlier, Supriyo had told TOI that Infosys was actively working to fulfil its recruitment target. The IT major celebrated Akshay Tritiya at its new campus in May; there was a trial run as well.
According to the IT minister, total direct employment on the campus would be 5,000 and another 3,000 would get ancillary jobs. The minister also said around 800 employees, who had been working in a rented location for more than a year, were shifted to the new campus. Supriyo had been invited to visit the campus in Feb.
The Infosys project was first announced in Bengal in 2008, with the then Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee govt offering it a 90-acre site. However, arson at a resort near the project site came as a roadblock.
