Purulia, a district typically associated with scorching heat, has unexpectedly turned into one of the coldest spots in West Bengal. In fact, the district is battling it out with the traditionally chilly hill station of Darjeeling for the title of the chilliest area in the state.
On Sunday, Purulia recorded a night temperature of 5.9 degree Celsius, just slightly higher than Darjeeling’s 5.6 degree Celsius. The day after, Purulia saw a minimum of four degree, while Darjeeling experienced seven degree.
Darjeeling, nestled amidst the Himalayan foothills often records the coldest temperature in the state. It’s a serene hill station renowned for its lush tea gardens and breathtaking views, while Purulia, situated in the southern part of West Bengal, is part of the tribal-dominated area colloquially known as Junglemahal.
Since December 12, South Bengal has been experiencing a significant drop in night temperatures. A cold wave alert was issued for five districts, including Purulia, as cold air from the northwest region swept across the state.
While Purulia and Darjeeling have been battling for the coldest spot, a slight respite is expected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted a temperature rise of 2-4 degree Celsius across the state till Thursday. Post that, there will further dip in temperature. However, there’s no forecast of rain or dense fog.
While light morning fog may occur in some areas, dense fog is unlikely. As winter progresses, it remains to be seen whether Purulia can maintain its unexpected cold spell or Darjeeling will continue to be the coldest spot in West Bengal.
On Monday, Bankura and Bishnupur recorded a minimum temperature of 12.5 degree Celsius, while Burdwan recorded 12 degree Celsius. Asansol recorded 13 degree Celsius, while Malda saw 14.9 degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, Kolkata recorded a minimum of 12.5 degree Celsius on Sunday, and on Monday it was 13.7 degree.
