Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Police reportedly raided a luxury resort in the Chilapata area of north Bengal on Wednesday in search of Bidhannagar councillor Samaresh Chakraborty. However, the three-member police team did not find him. The councillor is accused of attempting to extort money from a promoter, Kishore Halder. The cops have provided security for Halder as he is "feeling unsafe".
There are also allegations that this resort in Chilapata was built on land taken from the indigenous people. A person named Tapan Chikbaraik has made this accusation, claiming he was deceived into selling his land at a low price by the Bidhannagar councillor. Those close to Chakraborty have dismissed these claims, stating legal action is being considered in this respect.
The development comes at a time when the promoter has approached chief minister Mamata Banerjee with a complaint against the councillor. The complaint was filed via email and was also sent to the state's Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, and the Mayor of Bidhannagar, Krishna Chakraborty. Unable to locate him, the Baguiati police earlier posted a notice at his residence.
Promoter Halder was engaged in construction work in Ward 9 of Bidhannagar Municipality. On Sunday, a group of miscreants reportedly attacked him there, injuring him with the butt of a revolver. That night, Baguiati police arrested two individuals, Ramen Mondal and Shuvendu Mondal, in connection with the attack. It is alleged that local councillor Chakraborty was involved in orchestrating the assault.
Since the complaint, the councillor has been untraceable. On Monday, police searched several locations, including the councillor's home, to find him. Sources indicate that police visited his residence in Uttar Deshbandhu Nagar multiple times but did not find him there, although his wife was present. The police also attempted to contact him via his mobile phone but were unsuccessful. Eventually, Baguiati police posted a notice on his house wall, instructing him to appear at the police station.
