  • Kolkata: Two persons have been handed life sentences and one 10-years of rigorous imprisonment over the past week in cases involving the rape of minors in three police districts in Bengal.

    In Purulia, a special Pocso court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the rape of a 3-year-old girl on April 3, 2018. The child was found in a bloodied state and treated at Purulia Sadar Hospital.

    In Jhargram, a special Pocso court last week handed down a life sentence with hard labour to Sasthi Bagal for repeatedly raping a 15-year-old girl from Dumuria. The minor had been abducted from Jamboni police station area in June 2022.

    In Jalpaiguri, Rajen Munda was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 for sexually assaulting a minor. The crime occurred on June 7, 2016, and the verdict was delivered on Dec 12.

    Police officers said thorough investigation and evidence collection, coupled with effective trial monitoring, were crucial in securing these convictions. "The verdicts send a strong message about the state's commitment to protecting minors and ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes," said ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar.
