  • 12 Kolkata: The death of a 57-year-old in the custody of Bidhanagar Police created a controversy on Thursday. While cops claimed he died a natural death, his family contested the claim saying he had no previous illness.

According to police, the man, Rathin Debnath, was arrested by Bidhannagar Police on Tuesday in connection with a "fraud case" from Nadia's Haringhata. He was in police custody and kept in the police station lock-up. On Thursday morning, around 11.30 am, he complained of breathlessness and was admitted to a hospital. He was declared dead around 4.30 pm.

Police said his post-mortem will be videographed and a judicial inquiry will be completed as per law and procedures. A letter has been sent to the human rights commision, sources said.
