• Light rain, dense fog in weekend on Met radar

  • Kolkata: The mercury continued with its upward rise on Thursday and it is likely to go up further as the Met office has hinted at the possibility of rain between Friday and Saturday. Kolkata and its surrounding areas may be enveloped by dense fog on Sunday, it added.

According to the Met officials, the easterly wind system and an approaching westerly trough are responsible for pushing up the mercury. "THey are also likely to bring slight rain. The window for the possibility of rain is between the latter half of Friday and Saturday afternoon," said HR Biswas, head of the weather section at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

The rain spell, however, is expected to be light. Even as the Met office has predicted no rain on Sunday, there is a chance of a dense fog cover in the morning hours on Sunday, reducing visibility to between 50 to 200 metres. Along with Kolkata, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas, Hooghly and a few other districts are also likely to be foggy.

The easterly wind is injecting moisture into the air while the cold-bearing northerly wind has stopped reaching the city. The mercury dipped to the season's lowest of 12.5°C on Sunday before it started rising. On Thursday, at 16°C, it was 0.9 notches above normal. The maximum temperature of 26.2°C was also slightly above the normal mark.

Even as the mercury is expected to start falling from next Tuesday, Met officials said it was unlikely to be that significant due to a western disturbance that is likely to develop by early next week.
