12 Kolkata: State education minister Bratya Basu, on Thursday, said there is no reason to delay the appointment of vice-chancellors to state universities. Till now, 13 universities have received permanent VCs but 18 universities are still awaiting the appointments.
Without naming governor C V Ananda Bose, Basu said, "Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has already given her approval to the names of permanent VCs. We are still hopeful that the process will not be delayed. At this stage, delay is pointless, and it means disregarding the Supreme Court."
During his address at Bhasa Mela, Basu said all newly-appointed VCs of 31 state universities could have attended the programme had the delay not been there. "The stalemate situation in some universities has been resolved. Other universities are supposed to get over the current impasse. We just want all universities to get permanent VCs as early as possible without any delay."
He also stated the state is taking legal advice over the delay of the process, and this matter could be raised in the next hearing at the Supreme Court.
