123 Kolkata: A 26-year-old software engineer employed with a UK-based MNC jumped to death from the 16th-floor refuge area of their office in Sector V on Friday evening after completing his shift. Police said the youth, Paribesh Chatterjee, was depressed, on medication, and under a lot of stress recently due to multiple loans.
Police said that Chatterjee, a resident of Mukundapur, came to the office and logged into the system at the usual hour on Friday. However, his colleagues hinted that he seemed upset about something and was unmindful in his work.
"We are speaking to his colleagues and parents. They said he was attentive at work and a proficient employee. But of late, he was suffering from depression. We are checking the CCTV footage of the building to know exactly what the circumstances were under which he went to the refuge fire exit area and jumped to his death," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police.
Chatterjee was a cubic associate software engineer with the MNC. "He was a man of heavy build. Security guards posted at the building were the first to notice him when they heard a thud in the car parking area. They rushed to the spot and found him lying on his face in a bloodied state," the officer said.
The guards called the office seniors, who, in turn, called the cops. Chatterjee was taken to Bidhannagar Subdivisional Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. "We have sent the body for postmortem. Preliminarily, it looks like suicide but we are probing all angles to find out the reason for his death," the officer added.
Cops are also checking Chatterjee's laptop and mobile phones to know more details about him, his state of mind, and his financial condition, which could have led to his death. "As of now, we have learnt he was under debt and was suffering from financial distress," said the investigating officer.
