  • Kolkata: Amid the ongoing probe into the fake passport racket having alleged links with some post offices across Bengal, a consignment of 55 passports, tucked in an envelope with a broken seal, found in the letterbox outside the Titagarh Post Office, off BT Road, on Friday has raised suspicion. On finding the consignment, the postmaster alerted police, which seized all the passports.

"We have already checked some passports thoroughly and prima facie it appears that those passports aren't fake. However, the matter is being dealt with seriously. Efforts are being made to find out how they ended up there and who is responsible for leaving those in the letter box. All the persons to whom the passports belong to have been summoned," Indra Badan Jha, DCP, Central, Barrackpore Commissionerate told TOI.

CCTV footage of the post office and its surrounding areas was also being reviewed, police said. The post office authorities have also filed a written complaint with Khardah police station in this regard, an investigating officer said. The post office staff said

many people use this box to deposit letters and documents for sending those elsewhere.
