  • Sunil Kumar Shaw, who shares his name with a doctor, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly forging documents under the doctor’s name and copying his registration number. The arrest came after Dr Sunil Shaw filed a complaint, accusing Sunil Kumar Shaw of using his registration number to secure a position as a medical officer at Madhyamgram Municipality.

During the investigation, Kolkata Police served notice under Section 94 of the BNSS to the complainant Dr Shaw on December 3. On December 5, police seized some documents from the complainant, and returned the same after scrutiny. The police also served notice under Section 94 to the West Bengal Medical Council through an email and the authority provided information, the police said.

The police said the investigation showed that the accused Shaw, despite allegedly lacking necessary medical qualifications, had allegedly previously worked as a Medical Officer on a contractual basis at Eastern Railways in 2021 and 2022.

Dr Sunil Shaw, a resident Kolkata, alleged that on or before December 1, the accused produced the alleged fraudulent documents “as genuine”.

“Sunil Kumar Shaw (48) of Baidya Para main road in Halisahar was arrested on December 18 around 9.05 pm from his residence,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police. Shaw has been remanded to police custody till December 24.

Kolkata Police served notice to the Chairman of Madhyamgram Municipality through email regarding the appointment of Shaw.

The police said the accused had “passed Madhyamik in 1996, HS in 1998, BSc in 2003, and took a degree in Rajkiya Ayurvedic and Unani Medicine in Bihar in 2005”. He then “did an 18-month diploma course in studying drugs” before allegedly becoming a medical officer at the Eastern Railways.
