  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Joint Platform of Doctors to hold the proposed sit-in demonstration 50 ft from the Dorina Crossing at Esplanade.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh passed the order after the state objected to the holding of the overnight sit-in demonstration at Dorina Crossing from Dec 20 to 26 on grounds of traffic congestion in the area. Justice Ghosh ordered that the demonstration space should not exceed 40 ft in length and 23 ft in breadth.

Justice Ghosh directed the organisers to ensure that the participants in the demonstration do not exceed 200-250 at any given point of time so that the gathering does not spill on to the main thoroughfare. Justice Ghosh also directed the Joint Platform of Doctors to submit a list of the organisers to the police. "The organisers should interact with the police from time to time. The two parties should try to reach a consensus if the police ask to reduce the number of participants at a particular time," the court observed.

Justice Ghosh directed the police to submit a compliance report on the event on Jan 13, 2025.
