12 Kolkata: A day after governor-chancellor C V Ananda Bose sought an explanation from Jadavpur University interim VC Bhaskar Gupta for hurriedly convening the executive council (EC) meeting on Dec 17 and fixing the convocation date on Dec 24, Gupta and pro-VC Amitava Datta visited Raj Bhavan on Friday and explained to Bose that since degrees were awarded at the convocation, it was an important event in a student's life.
The university started preparing for the event much in advance as the convocation date was decided at an EC meeting on Oct 27. The degrees were approved at the Dec 17 EC meet. "It was communicated to him that the university already wrote to the governor, seeking permission for the court meeting," said an official. The official said JU would stick to its Dec 24 convocation plan.
Bose reportedly did not ask to cancel the convocation, saying students' interests were his concern. But if he would attend the convocation was unclear, said the official. Bose, during a visit to Calcutta University, said, "The EC fixes the convocation date, after which the court meets. Only then can a decision be made. Now only a week is left. How can so many certificates be signed? Students' interests are my concern. I am trying to sort it out."
