  • 12 Kolkata: The CID has confirmed that human remains recovered from a septic tank and a canal were that of former Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar, who was murdered in New Town in May earlier this year. The DNA profile sent to forensic experts has conclusively identified the dismembered remains as the three-time Awami League MP from Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. The confirmation came after months of investigation into his disappearance and murder, clearing the way for the trials to begin. The CID has already submitted the chargesheet in this respect.

Azim had arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment but was allegedly murdered the following day in a New Town apartment. The case took a grim turn when investigators discovered human remains at multiple locations — flesh specimens in a septic tank of a condo in North 24 Parganas and bones along a canal bank in South 24 Parganas.

The final breakthrough came when DNA samples from the recovered remains matched those provided by Azim's daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen, who visited Kolkata last month. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory conducted the analysis, leaving no doubt about the victim's identity.

"The DNA test reports confirmed the remains belonged to MP Anwarul Azim," said a senior CID officer. Investigators believe Azim was strangled before his body was dismembered and disposed of at different locations.

The investigation, initially handled by Bidhannagar Police and Barrackpore Police before being transferred to CID, led to multiple arrests. While the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's detective branch apprehended seven suspects, CID arrested two more connected to the case. However, the alleged mastermind, Aktaruzzaman Shaheen, an American national who was Azim's business partner, remains at large.
