  • Kolkata: With organ transplants decreasing in 2024 compared to the year before, experts at the Neurological Society of India's annual conference NSICON 2024 in Kolkata highlighted the necessity of organ donation on Sunday.

In West Bengal, kidney transplants fell by more than 60% compared to 2023 from 27 to 11, liver transplants by 50% from 12 to 6 and heart transplants by 78% from 7 to 2.

Arpita Ray Chaudhary, former ROTTO joint director and nephrology professor, spoke on the importance on moving beyond a personal cause to undertake such donatory initiatives.

L N Tripathy, organizing secretary NSICON 2024, when asked if any legislative mandate is necessary to initiate more organ donations after individual's demise, responded by stating that it should be discussed intensively in the parliament. "What NSI tries to do is make citizens more aware of such causes. Our plea is to the people to volunteer such donations," he stated.
