  • KOLKATA: From rehearsing choirs and setting up Christmas trees to organising special prayer services and decorating nativity cribs, the churches of Kolkata are bustling with activity, offering a glimpse of the universal message of peace and hope synonymous with Christmas. The facades of many churches have already been illuminated with colourful lights, enhancing their architectural beauty. Bright stars and lit crosses have been installed on steeples of many churches, symbolising the guiding star of Bethlehem.

Celebrations commenced with several churches organising philanthropic activities, community lunches, and prayer services for members.

At St Andrew's Church in BBD Bag, festive lights and a nativity crib have been set up. Special prayers will be held on Christmas morning, accompanied by a message for the congregation.

"We look forward to sharing the joy of Christmas with our community," said Reverend Swarup Bar.

St John's Church on Council House Street is preparing for a bustling holiday season. Its "Nine Lessons and Carols" service will take place on Sunday, while Christmas Day will feature a prayer service at 8.30 am. "We have decorated the church with beautiful lights and set up the Nativity scene," said church officer Rangan Dutta. Thousands are expected to visit the church during the festive season.

In north Kolkata, Duff Church in Manicktala is gearing up with special decorations, including its renowned Nativity scene, which attracts thousands of visitors each Christmas. "These efforts not only highlight the spiritual essence of Christmas but also create a welcoming environment for people of all faiths who come together and share the festive joy," said a member of the church.

At St Paul's Cathedral, preparations began well in advance this year, with the church hosting several philanthropic and religious activities leading up to Christmas. The Nativity crib, a focal point of the celebrations, is set up and will remain on display until early Jan. Celebrations will culminate in the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, followed by special prayer services on Christmas Day.

Sacred Heart Church on Lenin Sarani has also been preparing for the season, with a special prayer service planned in the chapel for members and their families.

In Park Circus, Bethel Church, home to around 300 members, is adorned with lights, cribs, and Christmas ornaments. "On Christmas Day, we will begin with a special prayer service followed by prayers for peace and well-being for everyone," said a church spokesperson.

For many of Kolkata's Christians, Christmas is a deeply cherished occasion.

"Christmas reminds us of the love and hope that Christ brought into the world," said Maria Gomes, a resident of Bow Barracks, an Anglo-Indian enclave off BB Ganguly Street.
