Mini Park Streets come up in other Kolkata neighbourhoods

12 Kolkata: Not just Park Street and Bow Barracks but numerous other neighbourhoods in and around Kolkata are getting ready to soak in the Christmas spirit. At these spots, street carnivals and musical performances are being planned during the Christmas and year-end week.
From Lake Town and Entally to Elgin Road, Picnic Garden, and Harish Mukherjee Road, from Kasba and Patuli, to Thakurpukur, Parnasree, and Chetla, several city localities and churches are being decked up. Multiple neighbourhoods are hosting diverse celebrations that will continue till the first week of the new year.
At Lake Town, near the clock tower, a carnival on the lines of Park Street will start from Tuesday and will go on till Jan 1. "A 2km stretch lining the service road and water body will have over 100 stalls, including sweets and cakes from different districts, play zones for kids, and live performances by several top performers from the city and districts. There will be night-long festivities, and we are set to make it bigger and better than earlier years," said Dibyendu Goswami, a member of the organising team.
At Patuli, the area surrounding the water body has been adorned with festive lights, and food stalls are already serving guests till late in the night. "On Dec 25, we will distribute cakes and chocolates to 25,000 kids from 5 pm, and the event will be attended by multiple celebrities and city mayor Firhad Hakim. There will be multiple persons dressed as Santa at the carnival entertaining the youngsters," said Bappaditya Dasgupta, local councillor and one of the principal organisers of the Christmas carnival at Patuli.
Street carnivals and fancy dress competitions for kids will be organised by Chetla Agrani Club. They are also decorating the entire Chetla neighbourhood with Christmas lights, bells, and stars. Neighbourhoods in Maniktala, Middleton Row, Entally, Parnasree, and Sareng Lane in Taltala, too, are being embellished in a similar fashion with shops selling Christmas trees, cakes, and other Christmas delicacies. "Elgin Road and Harish Mukherjee Street are also being decorated. All we want is to spread the Christmas festivities across the entire city, not just in Park Street," said Asim Basu, the councillor of ward 70.
Lights, streamers, Christmas stars, and thematic illumination have been installed at the Ruby Hospital crossing, where carnival organisers plan to distribute toys, chocolates, and cakes among children from Christmas Eve. "The intersection has been decked up in Christmas decorations. There will be men dressed as Santa entertaining children and handing them gifts and cakes," said Sushanta Ghosh, the key organiser and councillor of ward 108.
The area from Haridevpur to Behala Thakurpukur, with the highest concentration of churches, will have four fairs, complete with stalls and evening musical performances, starting from Tuesday and continuing into the new year.
