• Bengal assessing Class V, VIII students since 2019: Bratya
    Times of India | 24 December 2024
  • Kolkata: State education minister Bratya Basu on Monday said that Bengal "has already introduced assessment of students in Class V and Class VIII back in 2019". Through an amendment to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2010, Centre has scrapped the ‘no detention policy' for Class V and VIII students.

On X, Basu posted: "The School Education Department under the Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee GoWB has already introduced assessment of students in class V and class VIII back in 2019, so it is nothing new to us. But the process of assessment is much more rational and elaborate than that stated by the GoI." He included the modified order issued by state govt in Nov 2019.

Education officials said Class V and VIII students receive remedial instructions based on their test results. All India Save Education Committee general secretary Tarun Naskar said, "We fought for it since the ‘no detention' policy was implemented. We demand that pass-fail should be implemented from Class I."
