Kolkata: A joint team comprising Kolkata Municipal Corporation and cops on Monday conducted an eviction drive in and around Rabindra Sarani and demolished 12 huts that were illegally occupying half of Ramesh Chandra Dutta Street. Apart from these huts that constituted a slum, a building that housed a social club was also razed. This was the second time in a month that KMC and cops raided the area.
After the demolition drive, slum dwellers reached the residence of the state minister Sashi Panja to draw her attention to the demolition drive. However, cops from Girish Park and Jorasanko police stations pushed back the agitators.
According to a KMC official, local councillor Taraknath Chattopadhyay complained about the encroachment for a long time. "Based on the complaint by the councillor and some locals, we decided to conduct an eviction drive," said the civic official.
