• Sealdah flyover to undergo restoration
    Times of India | 24 December 2024
  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority is set to undertake carriageway restoration work on the Sealdah flyover, also known as Vidyapati Setu, by early next year as an interim step before starting retrofitting and strengthening work on the flyover.

Approximately Rs 2.8 crore has been allocated for the job. Officials stated the carriageway surface has developed potholes and craters in many places. "Before undertaking work to strengthen the flyover structure, the carriageway needs to be restored," said an official. The existing damaged bitumen layer from the carriageway of the flyover will be peeled off to reduce the flyover's weight.

According to plans, the pillars of the flyover will be strengthened with iron jackets, which will be placed on them, followed by further concretization work. Officials also said the hawkers conducting business below the flyover will need to be temporarily relocated. "Talks are ongoing with the hawkers regarding this issue," said an official. —Suman Chakraborti
