12 Kolkata: Churches across the city came alive with vibrant decorations, special prayers, and messages of peace on Christmas, urging devotees to prioritise harmony over division. Special sermons emphasised compassion, tolerance, and the need for forgiveness, reflecting the spirit of the season.
Devotees began their Christmas early, starting with personal prayers and reading passages from the Bible, after which they headed to their local churches dressed in their festive attire, mostly featuring red, white, or gold to symbolise the joy and sanctity of the occasion. Special prayers in some churches started at 7 am, with the singing of carols and the recital of Bible verses.
At St Mary's Church on Elgin Road, Reverend Father Biswajit Biswas reminded the congregation of the significance of Christ's birth in promoting peace and love. "I spoke about the unrest and suffering of people in different parts of the world. We must strive together to work for peace. As children of God, we must stand by those who are weak and vulnerable," said Father Biswas.
At St John's Church on Council House Street, prayers were offered for those suffering in different conflicts around the world.
"Every day we hear reports of pain and suffering. Prayers were offered for peace and brotherhood," said Rangan Dutta, the church officer.
At St Teresa's Church in Moulali, Father Subroto delivered the message of hope and peace. "This Christmas morning, I am blessed to share the message of hope, peace, and the enduring power of love. May the spirit of the season fill your hearts with joy and inspire you to spread kindness throughout the year."
At St Andrew's Church on Brabourne Road, the church's Nativity scene was a huge draw. The sermon underscored the symbolism of Christ's birth as a fulfilment of divine promises. "We reflected on the importance of compassion and forgiveness, as exemplified by the birth of Christ. May God's blessings be upon everyone," said Father Swarup Bar.
"On this holy day, I feel the warmth of Christ's love embracing our hearts, reminding us of the miracle of His birth and the eternal hope He brings to our lives," said Alisha Fernandez, a member of Church of Christ the King on Syed Amir Ali Avenue.
