  • 12 Kolkata: The Anglo-Indian enclave of Bow Barracks has emerged as a major attraction this festive season, drawing nearly 20,000 visitors since Sunday, with almost half of them coming in on Dec 24 and 25. The celebrations, which will continue through the first week of 2025, have turned the neighbourhood into a sought-after destination for revellers, including families, couples, and social media enthusiasts, sparking a surge in commercial activity across the area.

Businesses in the vicinity are thriving. From street vendors to bars and eateries, everyone is experiencing a business boom. Cakes and other festive treats at J N Barua in Bow Barracks are selling fast. "People are not only buying cakes but also clicking pictures. I already ran out of stock for the day," owner Ratan Barua said on Christmas night.

At Broadway Bar on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, managers are scrambling to accommodate the endless influx of patrons eager to spend quality time with loved ones. "Since the last weekend, there have been 20-25 people waiting outside for their turn at any given point of time. Many have clubbed a visit to the Bow Barracks with a meal or drink here," said a staffer.

Kathi rolls are flying off the shelves at Zahuri Restaurant on Metcalfe Street. Several local residents have also set up stalls, selling everything from biryani and kebabs to momos and Chinese. Christopher Lobo has set up a stall selling momos and Chinese. "This year, the turnout is higher than on previous years, with people hanging around beyond midnight. It is heart-warming to see so many people discover and appreciate Bow Barracks during this time of the year," said Lobo.

The celebrations have sparked a social media buzz, with reels, videos, and photos capturing the charm of the festivities. The tourism department has included Bow Barracks in the Kolkata Christmas Festival, illuminating the neighbourhood and providing other logistical support. "According to our estimate, close to 20,000 people visited Bow Barracks this festive season," said an official.

The streets around Bow Barracks have come alive with music, the aroma of Christmas treats, and the laughter of children. Lights, decorations, and elaborate festive installations adorn the enclave, that has more than 130 flats, and its neighbourhoods of Bow Street, Metcalfe Street, and Robert Street. Cops have cordoned off streets to ensure smooth access and safety of visitors. "Hundreds started visiting even before Christmas Eve. We anticipated high footfall and took steps to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians and cars," said an officer from Bowbazar PS.
