  • Kolkata: Father Patrick Eaton, SJ, former vice-principal of arts and science at St Xavier's College, passed away on Dec 26 at the age of 82. He suffered a severe cardiac arrest and breathed his last at a private nursing home in central Kolkata in the early hours of Thursday.

Father Eaton dedicated over 30 years of his Jesuit life to teaching English and sociology. He served in significant administrative roles, including the first Controller of Examination at St Xavier's College (Autonomous).

Remembering Father Pat, as he was fondly known among St Xavier's staff and students, principal Fr Dominic Savio said, "Fr Patrick Eaton was a great Jesuit and companion. He studied at St Xavier's and served St Xavier's College in different capacities, including its vice-principal and Controller of Examinations. He was one of the pillars of St Xavier's College and built up the college. He was a great inspiration to many students and staff. His deep commitment to serving the poor and marginalised will be remembered forever. We are very sad and shocked to lose a great educationist and a human being. His simple lifestyle, remarkable contribution to higher education, deep commitment to the underprivileged, and prayerful nature made an indelible mark on many who came across him."

Students across generations recall his unique ability to balance kindness and compassion with necessary discipline and authority. As an exceptional communicator and devoted Pastor, he demonstrated dedication and commitment to St Xavier's College.

The St Xavier's College alumni association issued a statement offering prayers for the departed soul.

The funeral service will take place at St Xavier's College Chapel at 9.30 am on Saturday, followed by the burial at Dhyan Ashram, Diamond Harbour Road.
