123 Kolkata: A 37-year-old Bangladeshi national, who reportedly stayed in Kolkata illegally for the past one year using fake documents, was arrested by Kolkata Police from Park Street around midnight on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, cops arrested Mohammed Abiyur Rahman from the Marquis Street area. Initial reports suggest that the man is originally from Kurigram village near Natunganj in Narail district of Bangladesh.
He allegedly entered India without valid identification before paying agents in Bengal to procure fake Indian citizenship documents. Sources claimed the accused kept shifting between Kidderpore and Park Street in last one year. "We sent a number of questions to different municipalities and panchayats regarding some documents used to attain the passports. This was one such case where the govt bodies replied that no such persons exist in reality and that the documents used to get the passports were fake," said an investigating officer.
"The instant case was recorded on the basis of a letter of complaint from the SI of Park Street PS under sections 337, 338, 336(2), and 340(2) of the BNS Act and section 14 of the Foreigners Act against Rahman. This is the second arrest of a Bangladeshi national posing as an Indian from the Park Street area in the past month," said Joint CP (crime and traffic) Rupesh Kumar.
"The accused entered India without having valid documents and thereafter prepared some forged documents and used those as genuine to fraudulently obtain Indian Aadhaar and PAN cards," said an investigating officer.
Police have learned that he used these fake documents for various purposes and suspect they might have been used for fraudulent activities. Additionally, the government lawyer stated in court, "We believe this individual is connected to a racket involved in creating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards."
Since Sheikh Hasina's ousting in Aug, Bangladesh has faced repeated unrest for various reasons. Since then, several individuals entering India from Bangladesh have been arrested. Around 11 persons have been arrested in Bengal alone.
