• Min temp slides, Met spies chilly end to year

  • 12 Kolkata: The minimum temperature dipped in Kolkata on Friday, even as the impact of a western disturbance that triggered rain earlier this week waned. The mercury slid three degrees to 16.5°C from 19.2°C on Thursday. It could rise over the weekend under the impact of another western disturbance and start sliding yet again from the night of Dec 30, eventually dipping below 15°C on New Year's Eve, said the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The maximum temperature reached 26.8°C on Friday.

While the city remained partially cloudy on Friday, the cloud cover could persist on Saturday. It will pull the minimum temperature up to 17°C-18°C during the weekend. The maximum could be around 27°C. "Some of the western districts of Bengal could receive rain over the weekend. Kolkata is set to remain partly cloudy on Saturday, though we don't expect rain. It will start clearing up from Monday morning, and there could be a significant temperature drop by Monday night. Since the western disturbance will recede, northwesterly winds will return, and the minimum temperature could slide to around 14°C on Dec 31. That is the normal temperature in Kolkata, though," said RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.

This is the third western disturbance to impact the weather in Kolkata and south Bengal since last week. Last Saturday, the city received rain. It rained again on Tuesday night. It is the ‘indirect impact' of the western disturbance and the flow of easterly winds that are carrying in moisture from the sea that have led to the clouds and the temperature rise.
