  • 12 Budbud (East Burdwan): At least 20 people were injured in an attack on Friday by an Indian grey wolf, which was later beaten to death by locals. Among the injured in the Budbud incident were three children who are being treated at Bidhannagar Hospital, Panagar Hospital and Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH).

Police said the wolf — considered endangered on the IUCN red list — was spotted in some areas between Debsala police camp and Gobindapur from 5.30am to 9am.

"My 7-year-old son was going to a neighbour's house when the wolf attacked him. He received 12 stitches on his head and around his ear. He is being treated at Burdwan Medical College," said Koucha Adibasipara's Rabi Mardi.

Sources said the wolf had also come close to an ICDS centre near Gobindapur. As many as 10 kids were in the classroom who were saved as ICDS worker Padma Mondal was alerted by the warning cries of locals and shut the doors.

By the time police and forest officials could reach the spot, villagers had thrashed the wolf to death. Forest officials recovered the carcass and sent it for postmortem.

DFO Burdwan division Sanchita Sharma said, "We have sent the body of the wolf for autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of death. We are also trying to identify those who killed the wolf. A complaint has been lodged at Budbud PS."
