Owners of bikes with modified silencers in Kolkata to face legal action

Kolkata: Lalbazar has instructed all its 26 traffic guards to take legal action against owners of ‘modified' motorcycles. Sources said action would be taken against alteration of the silencers of motorcycles, often done to emit loud noise. Under section 207 of the Motor Vehicle Act, any such violation would lead to vehicle's confiscation and also attract fine of Rs 5,000, cops said.
The owner will get the bike back only after the permission of DC Traffic is obtained. In certain cases, the owners can be taken to court as well.
According to Lalbazar sources, traffic police started a crackdown on such bikes from Friday night, taking action against two cases. Additionally, the top brass has also asked for immediate measures to be taken against groups of motorcyclists riding recklessly, especially past 10pm when there is less traffic on the roads.
If minors are found riding bikes, parents and the original owner of the two-wheeler would be summoned to the traffic guard, cops said. Cops have also decided to call up motorists, especially bikers, who have been repeatedly prosecuted for speeding and ask them to attend counselling sessions at the police headquarters. "They will be asked to adhere to all rules or face revocation of their licences from the transport department on recommendation of the police," said an officer. Police will check documents of vehicles with red and blue beacon lights to check the misuse of these devices.
