12 Kalimpong: A massive fire broke out at 11th Mile, Kalimpong, at 12.30pm on Saturday, gutting six shops. No casualties were reported. The Army division of Kalimpong and a fire brigade team unit from Sikkim brought the blaze under control. At least five water tankers were pressed into service.
B L Sherpa, officer-in-charge of the fire department, said they were notified about the blaze at 1:30pm. The situation was brought under control by 3:30pm he added. "The reason behind the fire and the damage sustained are yet to be ascertained," he said.
Kalimpong district magistrate Balasubramanian T said a bonfire near a scrap shop could have led to the fire.
Md Shakir, a local, said, "I came rushing as soon as I heard about the fire. Six shops have been destroyed. Nothing could be recovered from the house and shops."
