  • KOLKATA: Several private hospitals in Kolkata are ready to increase capacity in 2025 with more beds and new units, including those for cancer, gastro care, and mother-child centres. Some are also preparing to launch IVF units and enhance diagnostic services. At least three hospitals will inaugurate new units with a combined strength of 1,700 beds.

The new beds will be added for multiple other specialties across several facilities, including Ruby General Hospital, Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital, Narayana Hospitals, Charnock Hospital, Desun and B P Poddar Hospital next year. Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital is set to introduce a multispecialty unit with state-of-the-art facilities. A project to add 200 beds within the existing premises of Woodlands Hospital is already underway and will take one more year to become functional. "This will include a comprehensive cancer facility with dedicated beds and advanced radiotherapy, a transplant unit including a liver transplant facility, neurology, cardiology, neuro-interventional procedures, and increased outpatient clinical areas as part of the project. This will take our capacity to 365 beds by the end of 2025," said Woodlands CEO Rupak Barua.

Narayana Hospitals will also add more beds this year, including an oncology unit as part of a 'mega-project' that commenced this year. "In Feb, construction work for a mega hospital will begin in Kolkata. It will be a 1,000-bed superspecialty hospital offering all specialties, including a full-fledged oncology unit that will have 250 beds with facilities like LINAC and all that you need," said Narayana Hospitals COO R Venkatesh.

Charnock Hospital will launch its new unit - Charnock Lohia Hospital - at Rabindra Sarani with a capacity of 200 beds. Inaugurated this year, renovation work to convert a heritage structure into a multispecialty hospital is underway. The majestic, pillar-lined structure that housed Lohia Matri Sewa Sadan, a maternity home, was lying unused after the home shut down in 2017. Charnock Hospital, which has a 300-bed superspecialty hospital in Teghoria, signed an MoU with Lohia Trust that ran the maternity home to convert the facility into a 200-bed hospital with neurology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and several other disciplines with state-of-the-art facilities. "We hope to get it functional by mid-2025," said Charnock MD Prashant Sharma.

Ruby General Hospital will have 80 more oncology beds by Feb. The hospital now has 100 oncology beds with a total capacity of 316. One hundred beds will be added by the third quarter of 2025. The hospital will also install a digital CT scan machine and a second radiotherapy device. "The additions will take our capacity beyond 500. Our new oncology beds will come up at the new building, which will be functional during the course of the year," said Ruby GM - operations Subhasish Datta.

BP Poddar Hospital has plans to add 200 beds for multiple specialties and 150 beds for cancer care. "Around 40% of the new beds are already functional, while the remaining will become functional very soon. We will also have 50 beds for a new mother and child unit, 20 for gastro care, 10 for IVF, and 20 for eye care," said group advisor Supriyo Chakrabarty.

Desun will add a 200-bed multispecialty unit in 2025.
