  • 12 Kolkata: With Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation yet to undertake full-fledged road repair work in Salt Lake, despite funds being approved by the state, KMDA has been entrusted to prioritise repair of some of the most-damaged stretches in Salt Lake. This is to be completed before the upcoming Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) early next year.

The authorities have initiated the process to engage agencies for road repair across the three sectors of Salt Lake, with a cost estimation of Rs 12 crore. Among the stretches identified for overall repair and upgradation are the PNB Island to Canalside Road stretch, both flanks of the stretch connecting Tank No. 4 to Khalpar in Sector I, J K Saha to Karunamoyee, at 8 and 9 No. Islands, Kathgola Island to Canalside Road, Tank No. 10 to EE Block Island, Sluice Gate to East PS in Sector II, and on both flanks from Stadium Gate No. 1 to Amul Island, Anindita Stop to Labony Island, Beliaghata Service Road, and other stretches in Sector III.

Govt officials said apart from patchwork, BMC has not yet done any full-fledged road repair. "The roads have been listed for repairs on an urgent basis before the coming BGBS," said an official. Urban development minister Firhad Hakim recently said BMC was facing a lack of engineers. Officials mentioned that some KMDA engineers have already been deputed on an emergency basis to strengthen BMC's engineering wing.

"The condition of roads in Salt Lake remained terrible for a long time. I have to take my car for servicing quite often as it gets damaged because of bad roads,"

said Samita Bardhan Majumdar, a resident of Salt Lake CE Block. Only a few days ago, the Association of Bidhannagar Citizens, a newly formed people's forum, submitted a memorandum to the Mayor, stating that about 70% of the roads in Salt Lake are in a poor shape and that the condition of some roads was worsening, leading to dust pollution.
