12 Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is developing its own waste management system so that the daily waste generated in New Town can be processed and recycled in the township itself. The authority has already identified four spots — one in each of the three action areas and another in Rajarhat — for setting up its own waste processing and recycling plants.
Urban development minister Firhad Hakim recently said that after six months, daily waste generated in Bidhannagar and New Town will be transported to Patharghata waste treatment plant. At present, the waste is carried to Dhapa every day.
The proposed sites for developing the waste plants include a plot on DJ/18/1a measuring about three acres in AA-ID, plot no AA-IIE/57/B/3 measuring about 5.2 acres in AA-IIE, plot no IIID/6a measuring about 7.1 acres in AA-IIID, and at Banobitan nursery, Podra Bazar in Rajarhat.
Last March, New Town was included in the ‘Cities 2.0 programme' under the ministry of housing and urban affairs in partnership with the French Development Agency and National Institute of Urban Affairs for overhauling the township's waste management system.
New Town itself generates 85 tonnes of waste daily, but the amount will increase nearly three times as the neighbouring area under the NKDA and Hidco planning area, was included under the solid waste integration plan. For this, the present waste processing capacity needs to be scaled up.
