Water boost for Bypass, Jadavpur, Tolly: 10 more reservoir-booster stns on cards
Times of India | 30 December 2024
12 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has approved construction of 10 semi-underground reservoirs and capsule booster pumping stations to enable residents to access filtered water instead of depending solely on groundwater. According to a KMC water supply department official, the civic body needs to spend Rs 52 crore for the construction of the capsule booster pumping stations.
The construction of these stations will end before a water augmentation project adopted by the civic body's water wing is completed in mid-2026. According to a KMC water supply department official, the new stations, with the eight capsule booster pumping stations already under construction since early 2024, residents in large parts of the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt and neighbourhoods off Bypass may get safe drinking water in the next one-and-a-half years. Some of the areas that will benefit from the water augmentation scheme include Behala, Tollygunge, Garia, Jadavpur, Baghajatin, Ramgarh, Kasba, Garfa, Patuli, Mukundapur, and Beliaghata.
The civic brass has spent and sanctioned over Rs 200 crore for the construction of capsule booster pumping stations, said a source in the KMC water supply department.
The construction of capsule booster pumping stations was taken up to deliver potable water at uniform pressure to areas where residents are now compelled to drink groundwater. A couple of years ago, the KMC brass allocated substantial funds for augmenting the potable water supply to the city's parched zones. Accordingly, the KMC water supply department planned to set up a water treatment plant at Dhalai Bridge in Garia and augment the production capacity at Dhapa water treatment plant. According to mayor Firhad Hakim, the new booster pumping stations will ensure that residents who depend on groundwater benefit from a water augmentation project.
"We have started construction of the water treatment plant and augmentation of the Dhapa plant. We need to wrap up construction of the capsule booster pumping stations by early 2026 as the construction of the water augmentation project is expected to be finished by that time," said a civic official.
According to the official, the KMC water supply department has planned to invest major funds in constructing water treatment plants, capsule booster pumping stations, water reservoirs-cum-booster pumping stations, and replacing old, worn-out pipes. Hakim on Saturday said the KMC would go all the way to ensure that citizens were given relief from the water crisis for good. "We have decided to spend significantly to improve the infrastructure of the city's water supply system. Our motto is to supply pure drinking water to residents in the crisis zones who still depend on groundwater," Hakim said.
