  • 123 Kolkata: A local cricket tournament at Jagarani Math, located next to Taramoni Ghat Road in Kudghat, turned violent late Saturday night, resulting in a player whipping out a gun and brandishing it, and others resorting to intimidation, causing injuries, and even snatching.

A case was registered at the Haridevpur police station under multiple sections of the BNS and Arms Act. Cops have detained a youth in this connection and identified the accused. Multiple raids are on across the city.

Cops said that around 10.30 pm, when one of the semi-final matches was nearing completion, verbal taunting between the winning and losing teams escalated into physical violence. According to the complaint filed by Dipankar Panda, a resident of Motilal Gupta Road, the primary accused — whom he identified as Anmoy — allegedly attacked him with a firearm, striking him on the head with the weapon's butt. Panda claimed that the accused, after pinning him to the ground along with others, even snatched away his gold chain.

In the ensuing chaos, another victim, Mrinanka Sardar, sustained forehead injuries after being attacked with brickbats and repeatedly rained blows. The complainant also reported that his gold chain was stolen during the assault.

The Haridevpur PS registered a case against Anmoy, Nilanjan, and others under various sections, including charges related to armed assault and theft. The case was filed under sections 118(1), 115(2), 303(2), 351(3), and 54 BNS, as well as sections 25(1B)(a) and 27 of the Arms Act.

Cops are now conducting searches to apprehend the accused. A probe is on to ascertain the reason behind the attack. "CCTV footage has been collected from the club. Efforts are underway to determine who was responsible for this incident and why," said DC (Behala-South West) Rahul De.

According to locals, a cricket tournament was taking place for several days, and various teams came from outside to play cricket. None of the accused or victims are from the neighbourhood, claimed locals.

"Even as the match was about to end, an argument started among a few members of the teams that came from outside. We suspect that there was an old rivalry or a financial dispute that led to a scuffle between the two groups near the field during the game. We were shocked to know that the attackers were brandishing gun to intimidate others. The local Jagarani Cultural Club informed police," said Subhas Haldar, a local.
