12 Kolkata: From legal discussions to prayers and hope on the streets, Kolkata on Wednesday waited for the bail hearing of jailed Iskcon monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, slated for Thursday, nearly 530 km away in a Chittagong court.
Bangladeshi human rights advocate Rabindra Ghosh, who argued for Das on Dec 12, is now admitted to SSKM Hospital, and can't argue the case in person. "I am in touch with colleagues who will be there in the court to move on behalf of the monk. Many called and I told them I would not be able to reach the Chittagong court on Thursday," said Ghosh, adding he hoped Jan 2 would be an instance of "delivering justice to the minorities" in Bangladesh.
"Security has been arranged at court with BGB, Armed Police Battalion and Chittagong Metropolitan Police," said a Chittagong advocate.
At Iskcon Kolkata, monks and devotees will hold special prayers on Thursday. Saikat Jana, a devotee, said, "Bangladesh should prioritise humanity." Bangladeshis now in Kolkata, too, hope for the monk's releaes. Dhaka's Sayed Akbar Kabir said this was political vendetta and people there had no hatred for minorities. Bangladeshis living abroad assembled here under ‘Sanatani Sansad'. "We want to tell global rights community about minorities' plight in Bangladesh," said Arun Barua, who came from Geneva.
