Kolkata: ISRO technology for a GPS-based monitoring system and giant-size drones are high-tech security measures that will be implemented at Gangasagar Mela to ensure pilgrims' safe commute and rituals. The district administration is working overtime to coordinate with all departments.
The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj was not likely to significantly impact the number of attendees at Gangasagar, said an official, adding that the interest shown by tour operators and agencies from north India and other parts of the country suggested that the number of pilgrims would not drop vastly. Sundarbans affairs minister Bankim Hazra said the number of pilgrims at this year's Sagar Mela was expected around 70 lakh. He mentioned that till Dec 25, more than 7,000 people had taken a dip before leaving for Maha Kumbh. Last year, 1 crore 20 lakh people had visited Gangasagar.
The district administration plans to install the ISRO technology for GPS-based monitoring system on every vehicle and vessel to and from Sagar to monitor them effectively. Pointing out drones would extensively be used for Gangasagar's security, an official said the devices would help guide vessels, which often strayed from designated paths in fog, assist in delivering water and other essentials quickly and conduct security checks by flying over specific areas. Announcements would also be made via drones on the beach, the official added. Visitors, who would opt not to take a dip in the sea, would be assigned spots on the beach and would be showered with flowers from above with the help of drones, said the official.
