12 Kolkata: Mangla Haat in Howrah, one of the largest wholesale garment markets in the eastern region that was ravaged by a fire back in July 2023, will no longer remain a weekly traders' market. It will soon be converted into a 12-storey supermarket complex with all modern amenities.
KMDA will soon set up a 12-storey building complex with a car parking facility to rehabilitate the affected traders of Mangla Haat at Kartick Dutta Road close to Howrah district hospital and about 3.5 km far from the state secretariat of Nabanna.
The building is proposed to be set up on an 8 bigha plot at 1 Kartick Dutta Road. It will have two intermediate floors and a car park. Officials said that the agency engaged to chalk outthe structural design and drawing would need to complete the work in a month. The authorities will then engage a construction firm. "Construction work is likely to start from mid this year," said a govt official.
A fire ravaged the garments market around one-and-a-half years ago when nearly 2,000 stalls were gutted. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot and promised to rehabilitate the traders.
Officials said that apart from rehabilitating the fire-affected traders, the plan is to relocate the street vendors and hawkers who have been conducting business for a long time in the Howrah Maidan area.
