• Eyes on 2026 polls, Mamata Banerjee all set to hold mega administrative meeting

  • On Thursday, January 2, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a mega administrative review meeting at Nabanna Sabhaghar where top officials of the administration, heads of all departments, all District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police will be present, sources in the administration said.

The meeting holds importance ahead of the scheduled Assembly elections in April-May 2026.

A senior official of the state administration said, “After the turmoil in neighbouring Bangladesh, West Bengal’s situation also deteriorated. People were arrested for having connection with different terrorist organisations. Opposition parties are questioning police intelligence and the law and order situation of the state. Also, people were arrested for possessing fake identities and passports which also tarnished our image. In this situation, at the administrative meeting, the Chief Minister may give out a message to the state police force in the beginning of the year.”

On the other hand, the state government has started the disbursement of money for the “Banglar Bari” scheme which is also important for Banerjee and her party before the election. Out of 12 lakh beneficiaries so far, more than 8 lakh beneficiaries have received the first instalment from the state government, while the remaining will receive the instalments in the coming week, sources said.

Another 18 lakh beneficiaries will be given the scheme’s benefits in 2025, officials added. This year, the state government is set to spend more than Rs 50,000 crore on the scheme.

A senior official of the state administration said, “In 2025, the state government will have a huge financial burden due to the Banglar Bari and Lakshmir Bhandar schemes. Banerjee may give necessary instructions to the administration to mitigate the burden. Because of this burden, normal development work is being neglected. The Chief Minister is expected to give necessary instructions to the tune as infrastructural work is also important before the Assembly election.”

Sources said Banerjee has already given a message to the administration on “zero tolerance for corruption”, which was the party’s main agenda before last year’s Lok Sabha elections as well.
