Late entrants play catch-up, face 1st semester exams in 4-6 weeks

123 Kolkata: A first-year political science student, Avhir Kumar Dhanuk had shifted to New Alipore College in the final round of UG admissions this academic session after his registration with Asutosh College got cancelled. Reason, he was absent during the admission process. So, this second chance was no less than a jackpot.
A year out of his academic career was saved. However, pursuing the course isn't a cakewalk. He is now working hard to bridge the learning gaps, addressing the hurdles of late-entry. The challenge is intense, given his first semester exam may be held any time next month.
Dhanuk is not the only one having to face such a challenge. A student of Physics honours, Mayukh Das, has also shifted from Vidyasagar to Maulana Azad College in the final round of admission as per his choice in Dec. But unlike Dhanuk, Das is confident to face the challenge with a steely resolve.
The early Dec undergraduate admissions may have given students to enroll in subjects and colleges of their choice, but they have to play catch-up with only 4-6 weeks left for their first semester. Their classmates, who had enrolled in Aug-Sep, have the luxury of five months to prepare for the same semester.
Teachers of different subjects stated that a three-month gap in the semester system is a concern when they have to appear for the first semester soon. Colleges have been conducting special classes for the students who entered late. To wipe-out the learning gap, several colleges have started remedial classes so that the students who took late entry can make up as much as possible.
Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said all the departments where students took late entry had been conducting special classes as per their convenience. Similarly, Sanjay Chatterjee, a Physics professor at Maulana Azad College, also claimed of holding special practical classes for the students, who took late entry. Similar measures were also being taken up at New Alipore College, principal Jaydeep Sarangi claimed. The road ahead may not be smooth, but many late-entrants treat the late admissions as a golden chance. Sampriti Ghosh, who took advantage of the final round of UG admission and shifted to Lady Brabourne College, a college of her choice, echoed similar sentiments.
