Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police has cracked down on motorists for parking their vehicles illegally in the Maidan area. During the festive period, the South Traffic Guard prosecuted around 25-30 — most of them two-wheeler owners — each day for parking illegally in the greens.
However, a section of two-wheeler owners continued to break rules with impunity and even got into arguments with those who dared to protest. They took advantage of the fact that most cops were busy with the major challenge of traffic and pedestrian movement at the hotspots. The city usually witnesses maximum violations of the Calcutta High Court order — which has banned parking in the Maidan — every year between Christmas and New Year.
On Thursday, a TOI team found cops trying to stop illegal parking closer to Kidderpore Road and Outram Road. But violations were still visible on certain stretches closer to the TAI grounds and Hospital Road. Lalbazar said that it had now formed a special team to ensure that there was no parking in and around the Maidan. They have also deployed a tow truck. An inspector has been assigned to lead a team of five sergeants and 10 constables along with an equal number of green police personnel.An ACP has also been assigned to periodically assess the situation. "This has been done in the light of the high court instructions," said a DCP. "Suitable no-parking boards have been fixed at regular intervals across the area," said an officer from the South Traffic Guard.
Among the areas which will be closely monitored are Hospital Road, Queensway, Dufferin Road, Cathedral Road, Casuarina Avenue, Mayo Road, Kidderpore Road, Red Road, and Lovers Lane.
