Garden Reach collapse: Suspended KMC officials told to resume duty
Times of India | 3 January 2025
Kolkata: Three KMC engineers who were placed under suspension following the collapse of a five-storey under-construction illegal building in Garden Reach's Azhar Molla Lane, in which 12 people were killed and several critically injured in March, were transferred and asked to resume duties with immediate effect. The order came from the municipal commissioner's office on Dec 31.
An executive engineer, an assistant engineer, and a sub-assistant engineer were suspended after the Calcutta HC directed the state to ensure proper inquiry into the reasons for the building collapse.
"After an internal inquiry, we have reasons to believe that they could do little to prevent such an accident, as the illegal building that collapsed was being built under political assurance. If no action is taken against the local councillor, why should the officials whose guilt has not been proved suffer for a long time?" asked a KMC official. tnn
