  • 123 Jalpaiguri: A 50-year-old forest guard, who was part of a team driving away a herd of elephants, was trampled to death on Thursday at Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR).

In the morning, BTR got information about a herd of four to five elephants that had strayed into Kalchini tea estate. A team of foresters from Hamiltonganj Range of BTR (West) responded to the call.

While driving away the jumbos, forest guard Madan Kumar Dewan fired a round in the air and an elephant started chasing him. Dewan reportedly tried to fire another shot, but his firearm did not work. While running away, he stumbled and fell, and was trampled.

"It's very unfortunate. Dewan's family will be compensated in accordance with the norms," said Hari Krishnan, deputy field director, BTR (West).

In a similar incident in March last year, forest guard Ali Miyan was trampled to death in BTR by an elephant while participating in the tiger and herbivore census at Pukhri area of Jayanti Range, East Division.
