12 Sandeshkhali: A group of unidentified miscreants allegedly fired at least three rounds at the residence of Trinamool functionary Yadav Kumar Mondal, the panchayat pradhan of Sarberia-Agarhati, on Thursday evening.
This gram panchayat, under Sandeshkhali-I, was among the areas rocked by unrest early last year over allegations of atrocities and land-grabbing.
Sources said around 7.30pm, five masked assailants arrived on two motorbikes and opened fire before fleeing the scene. "The assailants targeted Mondal's house and fired continuously. Mondal, sensing danger, remained inside and did not step out. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack," a neighbour said.
While the identity and motive of the attackers remained unclear, the incident sparked concern among locals.
Mondal said: "I heard gunshots and immediately called my brother, who lives nearby. He told me to stay inside as people with guns were firing outside my house."
Police said a probe had begun. "Three empty bullet shells were recovered from the spot. Efforts are underway to identify the attackers and ascertain the motive behind the shooting," a senior police officer said.
