Kolkata: A 26-year-old food delivery executive, Subrata Maji, was allegedly beaten to death during a suspected drunken brawl in the early hours of New Year's Day at Mahisbathan. Jan 1 also happened to be his birthday.
One of his friends, Sabuj Mistri, was arrested. Maji was found in a bloodied state at Mahish Bathan Udayan Palli, near a field next to a local club.
Around 10.30 pm on Dec 31, a youth named Sona called Maji and he left home. When he didn't return after an hour, his mother called him but his phone was unreachable. The family later learned that a friend named Mrityunjay took Maji to a local doctor. The doctor advised taking him to a hospital. Maji was brought home in a critical condition, from where he was taken to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital by his family.
When his condition worsened, he was taken to RG Kar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Mrityunjay has since been absconding. — Tamaghna Banerjee
