  • Kolkata: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Mohan Mondal, a prime suspect in the abduction and murder of BJP Moyna booth president Bijoy Krishna Bhunia, in Pune on Thursday. Mondal, who was on the run with non-bailable warrants against him, is the third accused to be arrested over the May 2023 murder at Goramahal village in East Midnapore.

The NIA took over the investigation from Moyna Police following a Calcutta High Court directive in April 2023. The state police were accused of omitting crucial evidence, including the recovery of bombs from the crime scene, and excluding several suspects from the chargesheet.

Two others — Naba Kumar Mondal and Suvendu Bhowmick — are already behind bars. It was earlier reported that the culprits were linked to a former MLA. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes also took suo motu cognizance of the case. The Calcutta HC initially ordered an SDPO-level probe but later ordered NIA to investigate the matter.
