  • Malda: Two more youths were arrested in connection with the murder of Trinamool's English Bazar councillor Dulal Sarkar, who was shot dead by four men on Thursday.

Abhijeet Ghosh and Amit Rajak, both residents of English Bazaar, were held late on Friday, taking the total number of arrests in the case to five. They were produced in a court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for 14 days.

However, TMC functionaries, along with Sarkar's wife, believed that the mastermind was yet to be arrested.

Meanwhile, speculation was rife about the replacement of the Malda police superintendent. CM Mamata Banerjee had blamed police negligence for the murder, questioning why local cops withdrew Sarkar's security in 2021 despite him facing previous murder attempts.

Sarkar had been a councillor of English Bazar municipality for a long time and the civic body's former vice-chairperson.

Trinamool functionaries felt that there was no political reason behind Sarkar's killing. They hinted that some business transaction and property dispute might be the reason. Sarkar, of late, had acquired huge property on the outskirts of English Bazar.

The brutal killing also spread panic among TMC netas as well as traders. Councillors like Uday Choudhury and Subhamoy Basu said, "With Dulal Sarkar meeting such a fate, we are concerned about our security. We'll seek personal security from police."

Uzzwal Saha, a trader, said: "We are feeling unsafe after such a horrific attack. We have to think about our personal security now."
