12 Kolkata: Services on North-South Metro corridor were disrupted for more than two hours on Monday afternoon after a senior citizen jumped in front of a Dakshineswar-bound train at Chandni Chowk station. The man later died of his injuries at a govt hospital.
"The incident took place at 12.15 pm at Chandni Chowk station. As a train pulled into the platform, an elderly man jumped on the tracks of the Up line. We disconnected electricity supply to rescue the man. The man was taken to Medical College and Hospital," a Metro Railway spokesperson said.
The incident halted Blue Line operations on the stretch between Maidan and Girish Park stations. The authorities, however, ran truncated services between Maidan and Kavi Subhas on one side and Girish Park and Dakshineshwar on the other.
The two-hour disruption caused traffic snarls on various city roads as people looked for alternative means of commute. Anupama Agarwal, a commuter who got stranded, said, "I was headed to my office in Esplanade for my 1pm. We had reached Jatin Das Park station around 12.30 pm but there was no train. Instead of waiting at the station, I decided to take a bus. But it was a difficult commute as it was extremely crowded," she said. Badal Bose, a 62-year-old who was returning home (Kalighat) after a meeting at Park Street, booked an app cab to avoid packed buses. "But the fare was exorbitant," he said.
"A suicide on the first day of the week, when there is a heavy footfall of office-goers and daily commuters, is bad news," a tax consultant said.
