191 accident deaths in ’24, 20% more than in ’23: City top cop

Kolkata: City police reported 191 deaths in accidents in 2024, recording a 20% rise in fatalities than that in 2023, when 159 deaths were reported, said police commissioner Manoj Verma on Monday at the launch of the Safe Drive Save Life Half Marathon website at Lalbazar.
The figure, Verma added, was after a large area was added to KP's jurisdiction, with the entire accident-prone Bhangar coming under the force. "When I was the DC traffic, the average number of accident deaths in a year stood at over 400. The number reduced after the launch of the Safe Drive Save Life scheme in 2016. But we can do better," the CP said. "Traffic cops alone are not enough. What are required are strong awareness and the willingness of citizens to follow traffic rules."— Dwaipayan Ghosh
