  • Kolkata: An accident involving two buses was reported from the Dorina crossing at Esplanade on Monday night. This affected traffic flow on both Mayo Road and Dufferin Road for over an hour.

According to the South Traffic guard, the bus on route AC-24 came close to the Mayo Road bus stop to pick up passengers and suddenly swerved to the right lane to avoid hitting a taxi. Witnesses at Esplanade claimed the AC govt bus driver noticed another bus nearby and tried to overtake it. In the process, it collided sideways with a private bus plying on route 212.

"As a result, the mudguards of the two buses got entangled, with the right side of the AC bus and the left side of the private bus becoming severely damaged. As the AC bus driver tried to drive away forcefully, the entire frontal portion of the govt bus fell off," said a senior officer. The bus drivers and passengers escaped without any major injury.

The collision led to major traffic chaos. It took nearly two hours for WBTC to arrange for backup and remove the damaged bus from the road.
